Jain Temples:  Popular Pilgrimage Destinations in Jaisalmer

The Jain Temples of Jaisalmer are rated as one of the best historical treasures of the desert city. Dating back to the 12  and 15  centuries, archaeological as well as religious sentiments are attached to these Thirthankars (Hermits) temples. Crafted intricately in Dilwara Style and with yellow sandstone, animal and human figures present over the walls of the temples are the cynosure of all eyes.  Dedicated to different Jain Thirthankars, these temples hold religious importance and are visited by thousands of pilgrims every year.

Interconnected Seven Beautiful Jain Temples

Located inside the Jaisalmer Fort, seven Jain temples are engraved beautifully with intricate carvings and sculptures adorning the walls. These temples are dedicated to Rishabdev, Chandraprabhu, Parshvanath and Sambhavnath. The first temple belongs to the eighth Thirthankar, Chandraprabhu and was built in 1509. The temple features magnificent sculptures in the mandapa. The Rishabdev temple is at the right of Chandraprabhu temple. Beautiful pillars sculpted with gods and apsaras are the main attraction of the temple. Parasnath temple is behind Chandraprabhu temple. It has a marvellously carved entrance depicting an image of Jain Thirthankara at its apex.

A small door to the south paves the way to another temple of 10  Thirthankar, Shitalnath. The idol of the temple is the centre of attraction as it is made from eight precious metals.  The Northern wall’s door leads to the dim chamber of Sambhavanth. The remaining two temples of Kunthunath and Shantinath were built in 1536. There is an underground library, Gyan Bhandar, which houses priceless manuscripts and ancient texts. Remain open all day for Jain pilgrims; there is a time restriction for tourists. Shoes, food items and leather items are strictly prohibited under temples’ premises. So, if you want to soak yourself in the heritage and history of Jain culture, the Jain temples of Jaisalmer are a must-visit.
